Fees for Permanent Residence and Residence Procedures to be Significantly Increased

Based on the amended Immigration Control Act enacted in May, the Japanese government will substantially increase the fees for applications to change or extend residence status and for Permanent Residence applications effective October 1.
The Immigration Services Agency has officially announced the proposed Cabinet Order to revise the fees and has simultaneously begun accepting public comments. Under the proposal, the fee for a Permanent Residence application will increase from the current ¥10,000 to ¥200,000, while the current flat fee of ¥6,000 to ¥10,000 for applications to extend or change residence status will be replaced by a tiered fee structure based on the period of stay (e.g., ¥33,000 for a one-year period of stay and ¥75,000 for a period of stay of five years or longer).
In principle, the increased fees will apply to applications filed (accepted) on or after October 1, 2026.
